Objective
The aim of the Ammodo Science Fellowship is to provide talented researchers with the opportunity to conduct innovative scientific research at a (foreign) university or research institution best suited for their research.
Domains
The Fellowship is presented biennially in four scientific domains: Biomedical Sciences, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.
Budget
The total budget for the Fellowship amounts to a maximum of €800,000 per edition. The individually awarded Fellowships can range from a minimum of €50,000 to a maximum of €200,000. Fellows may allocate the funds to a scientific research project, in accordance with the budget outlined as part of their application.

Applicants
The Ammodo Science Fellowship is targeted at talented researchers at the beginning of their careers (0-5 years after receiving their first PhD). The Fellowship offers them the opportunity to conduct their own innovative scientific research at a (foreign) university or research institution and thereby expand their international network. The applicant must have a connection to the Netherlands by meeting one or more of the following criteria:
- a bachelor’s degree obtained at a Dutch university, and/or
- a master’s degree obtained at a Dutch university, and/or
- a PhD obtained at a Dutch university.
See the Regulations for the exact conditions of the first edition. The new Regulations for the Fellowship 2026 will be available at the end of 2025.
Host institute
The host institute must provide a high-quality research environment that is ideally suited for the proposed research. The research may take place at:
- a foreign host institute, if the applicant obtained their PhD at a Dutch university or research institute;
- a Dutch host institute, if the applicant obtained their PhD abroad or has carried out at least two years of postdoctoral research abroad, and has obtained a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree from a Dutch university.
The host institute must be a university or a largely publicly funded research institute.
Application
The application consists of:
- the application form;
- a letter of acceptance from the host institute, including an explanation from the intended supervisor who has a permanent appointment at the host institute;
- two reference letters from scientists who hold positions at a university or research institute, who have expertise in the field of the proposed research, of whom at least one must be a full professor.
The application forms are available only in English and must be completed in English.

Selection
For each scientific domain, an advisory committee is appointed to assess the applications based on the criteria outlined in the Regulations for the Ammodo Science Fellowship. Within each domain, the advisory committee will select candidates. The Ammodo board will make the final decision on the awarding of the Fellowship.
